Eastern Sierras Photo Workshop - Summer 2009
I've been wanting to make a photographic journey to the Eastern Sierras this year but had not gotten around to actually planning the visit. Then along came a flyer for a photography workshop given by the "Friends of Arizona Highways." I was sold. I had gone to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon with "Friends" and was quite pleased with that experience. The venue was quite full turned out to be quite exhaustive. With the long days and our desire to get to the various sites forty minutes before sunrise or stay until forty minutes past sunset, this turned out to be an exercise in sleep deprivation. None the less it was a great workshop and as usual I learned a lot.

We started out in Las Vegas and drove trhough Death Valley to Lone Pine, our first stop. There we photographed the Alabama Hills both at sunset and at sunrise. The Alabama Hills are the foot hills to Mount Whitney and the site of many of the early western movies. After one night at Lone Pine, we traveled to our next staging area, the town of Bishop, California. From here we shot sunset a South Lake and Sunrise at North Lake. Both lakes are in the John Muir Wilderness area and are the trail heads for may trails into the Sierras. Also while at Bishop, we spent one sunrise shooting the Owens River and the Sierras and then we traveled to one of the highlights of the trip, the Bristlecone Pine forest in the White Mountains east of Bishop. After spending two nights in Bishop, we moved an hour north to June Lake which put us within striking distance of Mono Lake, Bodie ghost town and Yousemite National Park.
