During its prime around 1879, Bodie boasted a population of 10,000. The town, like many on the eastern slopes, was abandoned when the gold ran out. It became a state park in 1962 and has remained in a state of "arrested decay" since that time. The buildings left standing represent only 5% of what made up the town in the 1800s.
