The obelisk is part of Bernini's spectacular fountain, la Fontana dei Fiumi, or 'Fountain of (Four) Rivers" erected in 1651. Four statues at the base represent the four rivers from various parts of the world: The Danube for Europe, the Ganges for Asia, the Rio de la Plata for America, and the Nile for Africa.
