The Colossi of Memnon are a pair of gigantic statues of Amenhotep III and fronted his mortuary temple. Their original function were to stand guard at the entrance of the temple, which at the time (3500 years ago) was the largest temple in Egypt. It is believed that much of the temple was used as a quarry by subsequent Pharaohs.
