Turns out these are actually tourist rides "over the desert". Basically they are up for 30 minutes. The sunrise was gorgeous against the mountains except for the pollution hugging the ground. There was some sort of burning taking place down steam causing the smoke. Sad part (from a photography perspective) is that the air cleared up around 11:00 am.
