The temples of Abu Simbel were built by Ramses II. The main temple consists of four gigantic statues of himself, hewn from the mountainside, where his unblinking stare confronted travelers as they entered Egypt from Africa.

The prospect of losing the Temples to the rising waters of the Nile impelled UNESCO to undertake the project of moving the temples 61 meters above and 610 meters behind their original site. This was a tremendous engineering feat.

This was quite a beautiful site and was worth getting up early and leaving our hotel in Cairo at 3:00 am for the flight down here.
