Box Canyon Ruins

These ruins are typical of many pueblos found in the region. The walls were constructed of nearby sandstone and limestone and held together with mud. The roofs were flat made of timbers lying side by side and then covered with smaller branches and finally covered with a layer of mud. Smoke and access to the rooms was through a square hole cut in the ceiling. Doorways and windows were rare. As rooms were abandoned, the timers were scavenged for either firewood or used to build other pueblos.
