The Wupatki National monument is a collection of Pueblo ruins dating back to 1100 A.D. It lies about 21 miles north of the Sunset Crater National Monument entrance on the 35 mile loop road. The loop road begins and ends on US89. I stopped and visited the ruins on both legs of my trip to Durango. I visited five sets of ruins: Wupatki Pueblo, Wukaki Pueblo, Lomaki Pueblo, the Box Canyon Dwellings and Citadel Pueblo. It's believed that this region housed a total of 2000 resident within a days walk from Wupatki Pueblo.
