Iceland Photo Tour - July 2017
My brother-in-law Tom and I on the flight to Reykjavik, Iceland.
The shopping area in Reykjavik. at the top of the street is the Hallgrimskirkja, a Luthern Church standing 244 feet high.
It is amooung the tallest building in Iceland.

Our driver and guide, Oli. Not only was he knowledgeable he is an outstanding photographer.
Hraunfossar Falls- a series of waterfalls formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 1200 feet.

Tom standing in front of our bus. Basically a bus shell attached to a flatbed truck. No suspension!
Home for two nights on the Snaefellsnes Peninsula.
Kirkjufellfoss Falls - rainy and a poor sunset but a beautiful site.
Kirkjufellfoss Falls
The Black Church is black because the exterior wood is painted with pitch, just like the hull of a boat. This is to protect it from the harsh Icelandic elements. This works fairly well and buildings treated in this way have survived over 100 years.
Cemetery next to the Black Church.
Surrounding the Black Church is a Lava field loaded with Wild Flowers as far as the eye can see.
Gatklettur Arch along the Snæfellsnes peninsula.
An Arctic Tern diving at Serena because she was getting too close to the Tern's nest.

Hvítserkur is a 50 foot high rock rising from the Gulf of Húnaflói in northern Iceland. It resembles a drinking dinosaur. During low tide you can actually walk it. This shot was taken around 11:00 at night. Again with poor lighting.
This iPhone image shows the rock formation from about half a mile away.

Dettifoss - said to be the most powerfull waterfall in Europe.
Dettifoss - The source is the nearby Vatnajökull glacier, whose sediment-rich runoff colors the water a greyish white.
Lake Mývatn is a volcanic lake in northern Iceland and is the site for the filming of the Game of Thrones "beyond the ice wall" segments.
An un-named waterfall on the road leading into Djúpivogur on the east coast of Iceland.

The outside of the museum next to our hotel at Vatnajokull was made to look like a book shelf..
Jökulsárlon Glacial Lagoon - Icebergs breakoff from the Glacier due to the rising and falling of the ocean tide.
Jökulsárlon Glacial Lagoon - The icebergs flow out to sea on the receding tide and clog up the river.
Geese marching past us
Sunset at Jökulsárlon Glacial Lagoon

This is the same iceberg shown on the previous page but taken 10 minutes later. The light is always changing.
The lagoon empties into the river with the outgoing tide.
Eventually the icebergs break up and flow into the Atlantic.
As the congestion increases so does the velocity of the water
Eventually many of the icebergs are washed ashore looking like crystal sculptures.
A dramatic setting on the jet black sand.
Jökulsárlon black sand beach - Icebergs being washed ashore
If only we had the sunrise lighting these sculptures
A sod covered church afforded us a bathroom break.
Too bad they were just getting ready to paint it.
The scaffolding does nothing for the church.
Another iceberg from another glacier.
I didn't catch the name of this Glacier. Jökulsárlon is a tough act to follow.

Skogafoss Waterfall
Skogafoss Waterfall. It's proximity to Reykjavik makes it a very popular location. Climbing up the hill was not in the cards today!
Avoiding the crowds meant either walking up to the falls and getting wet or wading out into the river.
Balance issues and water don't make for a happy camper but Frank and Doug rose to the challenge.
They got the shot!

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
This water fall is unique in that it allows you to shoot through it from behind. That is the shot to get but for another time.
Our group. A great group of very talented photographers led by our leader Doug Steakley (in the yellow hat)
