Yellowstone in Winter 2014

In January I went on a photo excursion to Yellowstone with photographer Doug Steakley. I enjoyed it so much I signed up to return next year.

The patterns are formed by falling branches catching minerals and attracting bacteria in the mineral rich warm water.

When they were alive, the runoff from nearby thermal features flooded the area around the trees. Minerals in the water plugged the base of the trees and killed them, leaving their bases white.

This geyser erupts every 7 hours and lasting 30 minutes. It went off just as I was approaching it.
