The entrance to the Fortress

Construction on the present day fortress was started in 1282 and completed in the middle of the 16th century. (At that pace, construction must have been guided by our congress!) Construction took place while Venice ruled the region. It's believed that Spanish military engineers took part in the construction which might explain why the fortress is also referred to as Spanjola.
